In Moscow finalists of the international architectural design contest for the development of the Smart School educational complex  were named. The international jury finally determined three of the six best world architectural bureaus, selected earlier. In mid-July, three finalists will visit Russia to get acquainted with the site and finalize the projects. The winner will be presented in September 2015.

49 architectural teams from 26 countries of the world participated in the architectural contest, organized by the Strelka Institute for Design and Architecture.  6 bureaus  selected during the first stage  began to  elaborate detailed architectural and planning solutions for the educational complex. On July 30 the jury selected three best of them. The finalists are: CEBRA (Denmark); ARCHITECTS RUDANKO (Finland); WORK ARCHITECTURE COMPANY (USA). These companies are to go to Irkutsk in July to get acquainted with the site and the city for finalizing the schematic design. The winner will be determined in August, the presentation of the project will be held in Moscow and Irkutsk in September.

"We tried to choose projects that would give children the opportunity to perform research and educational travel. The school building should provide freedom to move and to  study   the environment, have friendly design and variety of shapes and textures. The projects of the finalists reflect the main principles of the modern school educational space: "friendliness", freedom of movement, visual transparency, connection with the environment and ability to transform, "said Mark Sartan, project manager and  CEO of "Smart School" company.

Later on  the design and working documentation for the construction will be developed in cooperation with Russian consultants experienced in adapting international projects to Russian building rules and standards.

"In Russia, one of the largest and most unique projects in the architecture of educational complexes is being carried out. For Russia, this project can be compared to designing  Google headquarters in America. The best architectural teams have offered breakthrough ideas and the jury really was spoilt for choice, "said Tina Kandelaki, member of the jury and initiator of the Smart School project. - "Smart School is an incubator of ideas, technologies, educational practices. But on top of that, it is a powerful social  elevator for children with special needs. It is a well-timed and noble challenge. And based upon the sketches of the contestants, the idea that we have been cherishing for several years will be brilliantly put into practice : there is simply no  other project like that in Russia".

The jury included leading experts in architecture and education: Ann Finlayson, director of the British public organization Sustainability and Environmental Education (SEEd); Kristin Jarmund, Norwegian architect, head of the architectural company Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter AS; Grigory Revzin, architectural critic; Tina Kandelaki, businesswoman and public figure; Elena Osipova, Education Minister of the Irkutsk Region; Mark Sartan, Smart School CEO; Igor Remorenko, Rector of the Moscow City University of Education.
